ABOUT US

We’re currently an unincorporated charity run by volunteers - We're engineers, academics, event organisers and interested individuals who bring a unique skillset of different disciplines. Our idea is simple - to provide residents and local businesses in Southampton with an affordable sensor to make an honest assessment of the air quality and ultimately facilitate change.

WHAT WE DO

Measuring the quality of the air we breathe typically requires expensive equipment and specialists to make sense of the data. This is what we want to change. As a first step we are engineering an affordable air pollution sensor for the community. We'll measure Particulate Matter and Nitrogen Dioxide - key indicators of air quality. In a second step we'll embrace the methods of Citizen Science to equip the community to measure air quality data  with a view to influencing government policy.

FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Identify exposure

We’re running school campaigns across Southampton to Sniffy, our air monitor is a highly technical device, including a small computer, interesting software and different components. An ideal project to show kids how science and sensors work and the importance of air pollution! Please get in touch with us to find out more!

We all need to breathe clean air to live. Air pollution is invisible, but it affects us all. As a resident of Southampton you can participate, simply by attaching a small sensor to your home. This gives you clear visibility of the pollution you are exposed to whilst participating in a revolutionary air quality project. Please get in touch - we are so excited to hear from you!

We are looking for volunteers of different disciplines to support our project and drive real change. No matter of you are a student looking for impactful work experience, a professional who cares about clean air, a concerned parent or individual who lives with pollution related health issues – we’d love to hear from you. We are always looking for people to help expand our community project.

Southampton air pollution is now attracting national attention, businesses can have a major contribution in monitoring and identifying potential causes of air pollution. This can help businesses to understand air quality in their immediate environment, as well as the exposure to pollution experienced by staff. Get in touch with us to be included in our mailing list and learn more.

MAKING AIR QUALITY PERSONAL

We’re a community organisation formed entirely of volunteers. We’re engineers, academics, event organisers and interested individuals who bring a unique skillset of different disciplines. Our idea is simple – to provide every resident or local business in Southampton with an affordable sensor to make an honest assessment of the air quality and ultimately facilitate change.

MEET SNIFFY - THE SENSOR

We are developing an affordable air pollution sensor called Sniffy which will enable Southampton’s community to measure the quality of the air they breathe in places which matter to them – either at home or at work. Sniffy can be mounted virtually anywhere there is power and a Wi-Fi connection. We aim to make air quality monitoring both simple and interesting. We’ll run guided walks, bike rides and events to bring awareness of air quality to everyone.

Installing many Sniffy sensors across Southampton gives a unique picture of the air quality and polluting sources around our city.
